Congressman Schiff on House Passage of Legislation to Prevent Fuel Price Gouging

“Gas prices are spiking again with no end in sight. In Los Angeles, they’re back up to a whopping $6 per gallon. And these record-high prices aren’t just hurting us at the pump – they’re ratcheting up prices on all sorts of consumer goods, including groceries and other essentials as they make their way towards the families that need them most.

“Oil companies are continuing to put profits over people, and deliberately keeping their production low so they can keep their prices high. This is exploitation, plain and simple, and it needs to end. Today, the House voted to deliver some much-needed relief to families and their pocketbooks by holding Big Oil accountable and cracking down on this unscrupulous price gouging.

“But the truth is, the only long-term way to inoculate ourselves from Big Oil’s price manipulation is by going all-in on the transition to clean energy. It’s the best thing for our economy, our national security, and our planet – but the longer we sit on our hands, the more this precious window of opportunity will continue to shrink. And our children and grandchildren will be the ones to pay the price.”
