Schiff Statement on the Senate January 6 Commission Vote

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, issued the following statement after Republicans in the Senate failed to support a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol:

“The decision by Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to attempt to bury the truth and hide their complicity, along with that of Donald Trump, in the January 6 assault is the height of cowardice and callousness.

“Democrats worked across the aisle, agreeing to everything the Republican negotiators needed to reach a deal. We did this in the interest of achieving a truly bipartisan Commission, and we succeeded. But Republicans put their election concerns above the security of the Congress and country. Today's vote also makes it undeniably clear we must end the filibuster and its stranglehold on progress.

“While today’s vote is a remarkably dark moment in our history, we will uncover the full and sad truth about that deadly day - with or without Republican cooperation. We owe it to the victims of the January 6 insurrection and to the country. We must never allow this to happen again.”
