Schiff Statement on Senate passage of the new START

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) released the following statement after the Senate passed the new START:

“Today, the Senate took an important step to bolster our nation's security by passing the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) and sending it to the President to be signed into law. The nuclear-arms pact between the U.S. and Russia, which builds on decades of work by Democratic and Republican presidents, limits the number of nuclear warheads to 1,550.  Additionally, the treaty would allow a return of monitoring and verification, which is crucial to the continued maintenance of strategic cooperation between the two nuclear superpowers and gives a degree of assurance to our national security policymakers that no satellite can match.  Finally, passage of this legislation is an acknowledgement that Congress can work together to find sensible solutions to the nation's challenges.”
