Schiff Statement on Monterey Park Shooting

Burbank, California – Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) issued the following statement on the mass shooting in Monterey Park:

“As a country, we have once again awoken to the horrific news that one of our communities has fallen victim to the needless despair of gun violence.

I am heartbroken for the people of Monterey Park, a community I once had the honor to represent, and the families and friends of the victims.

And while we are still awaiting more details from local authorities, the timing of the shooting - coinciding with Lunar New Year festivities - and it’s occurrence in a largely AAPI community, will demand a thorough investigation into the shooter’s motives and the possibility this shooting was a hate crime.

Mass shootings are a uniquely American problem. Made possible by gutless politicians who have allowed the unfettered flow of weapons of war into our streets and have abandoned their responsibility to value the life of individuals over the interests of the gun industry.

Last Congress, Democrats passed the most comprehensive gun safety legislation in history. It died in the Senate because not enough Republicans would stand up to do what’s right. Tonight, new parents will grieve the loss of their children — the worst all possible tragedies. Made all the more painful because it was preventable.

We will never stop fighting for communities like Parkland, Newton, Charlottesville, Uvalde, and now Monterey Park. This madness must stop.”
