Schiff Statement on LAUSD and SEIU Local 99 Agreement
Burbank, CA – Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) issued the following statement on the deal reached between the Los Angeles Unified School District and SEIU Local 99:
“I am glad the Los Angeles Unified School District and SEIU Local 99 have come to an agreement that will raise wages for essential school employees including bus drivers, teachers’ assistants, and food service workers. These employees, who are critical to our students’ education and futures, have been making an average of $25,000 a year — well below the poverty line. With this deal, they’ll not only receive a well-deserved 30% increase in wages, but retroactive pay, bonuses, and expanded health care benefits.
There is nothing more important than the education of our children, and the essential employees who keep them safe must always be paid a fair wage and treated with respect. And there is more to be done — particularly at the federal and state levels — to step up and provide better funding to our schools so we can do even more to support our teachers, education workers, and students. I stand ready to work with teachers, students, parents, and school districts to make this happen.”
