Schiff, Education Secretary Cardona Meet in L.A. to Discuss Federal Efforts to Get Students Safely Back in Classrooms

Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) welcomed U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona to Los Angeles’ Fairfax High School, where the pair, along with students, education advocates, and community members, discussed how they will work together to deliver California schools and communities the resources they need to help students succeed as they prepare for a return to in-person learning.

“As the worst of the pandemic fades across California, I’m glad to see kids safely making their way back into the classroom,” said Schiff. “This year has been hard for everyone, but perhaps no one made more sacrifices than students, families and teachers who have struggled with the many challenges posed by distance learning. The Biden administration’s plan to reopen schools — coupled with funds for local school districts from the American Rescue Plan — will bring immeasurable benefits to students, parents, and educators alike. I was excited to welcome Secretary Cardona to Los Angeles today and to work with him to get our children back with their friends, back with their teachers, and back on track to succeed.”

Secretary Cardona visited Fairfax High School to meet with Los Angeles students, mentors, and education advocates about the American Rescue Plan’s critical investments in summer programming and the Biden administration’s efforts to get students back in the classroom. Through the American Rescue Plan’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief program, the Los Angeles Unified School District received $2.5 billion in funding that will help local schools reopen safely for in-person learning and address the long-term impacts of the pandemic on students’ education and well-being. A summary of the purposes for which these funds may be used can be found here.
