Schiff Applauds Important Legislative Step for Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) applauded an important step towards the passage of his legislation, the Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act, when it was reported by the Natural Resources Committee. By reporting the bill, the Natural Resources Committee sends it to the House floor for further consideration.
"I am thrilled that the Natural Resources Committee today passed my Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act out of committee, an important step on the path towards enactment. I have been pursuing passage of this legislation to more than double the size of the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area for nearly twenty years. It will preserve open space and the natural beauty of our region, and I am excited to see the bill take one step closer to becoming law. Los Angeles County is a park-poor region and this legislation will help to preserve easy access to open space for future generations of Angelenos. I look forward to continue working with my colleagues to make this bill a reality."
The Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act would add more than 191,000 acres of the Rim of the Valley Corridor to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA). It would expand the SMMNRA to include many, but not all, of the land included in the study. The lands included within the expansion will be known as the Rim of the Valley Unit and stretches from the Simi Hills and Santa Susanas to the Verdugos and on to the San Gabriel Mountains. The bill will enable NPS and the local community to better protect natural resources and habitats, and provide members of the community with improved access to nature for recreational and educational purposes.
