Rep. Adam Schiff Statement on Election of President-Elect Joe Biden

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) issued the following statement:

“It is now clear that, after all of the votes are counted, on January 20, 2021, we will have a new President and Vice President, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

“Our fellow citizens came out in historic numbers and voted to decide the direction of this country. They did so peacefully and safely in the midst in a once-in-a-century pandemic. That is how democracy should work.

“Joe Biden’s story is an American story, a story of loss, perseverance, determination, and human decency. His victory today shows that in America, those qualities still matter. That right still matters. That truth still matters. That decency still matters.

“Kamala Harris’ story is an American story, too. In electing the first female, and first woman of color, Vice President, Americans made a powerful statement that our nation is still a land of opportunity for all.

“But this is not Joe Biden's and Kamala Harris' victory alone.

“It’s a victory for the American people who stood up and spoke out against Donald Trump’s worst excesses and abuses. It’s a victory for those on the ground who organized, registered, and turned out voters and marginalized communities. It’s a victory for those who voted in record numbers. And it’s a victory for our democracy.

“Since his first days as a candidate, Donald Trump has undertaken an attack on the foundations of our democratic system, a system that has endured for centuries. As president, rather than seek to unite a fractured nation, he has cultivated bitterness and division, all in service of his personal and political gain.

“Joe Biden will be a great president. He will turn immediately to combating the pandemic that is spreading to historic levels today, and which Donald Trump has ignored. He will build back our economy, and strengthen the institutions of our democracy. And despite our real divisions, I know Joe will work to govern as an American president, and strengthen our relationships around the world.

“The work of protecting our democracy is far from over, and much work remains to be done. But with Joe Biden as our President and Kamala Harris as our Vice President, we will once again be the force for freedom, prosperity, and democracy that the American people and the world need us to be.

“Let’s get to work.”
