Schiff, Brownley, Lieu Urge Creation of P-22 Memorial Stamp

Burbank, California – Today, Congresspersons Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), Julia Brownley (D-Calif.), and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), wrote to the Chair B.J. Bueno and members of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee asking the committee to recommend a postal stamp in honor of P-22 be issued following the passing of the mountain lion known as the “Hollywood Cat.”

The stamp would feature P-22 in front of the historic Hollywood sign to also honor the 100th anniversary of the iconic Hollywood sign.

In December, after years of capturing the hearts of Los Angeles' residents, P-22 died from euthanization following an accident where P-22 was hit by a motor vehicle.

“P-22 was many things: our favorite celebrity neighbor, the occasional troublemaker, and a beloved mascot for our city. His exploits were followed not just by ordinary community members, but he had a devoted following online, and his comings and goings were even tracked by the local news. But most of all, he was a magnificent and wild creature, who reminded us all that we are part of a natural world so much greater than ourselves. Even in Los Angeles,” wrote Schiff, Brownley, and Lieu.

A memorial for P-22, where Schiff is set to speak, is scheduled for Saturday.

B.J. Bueno, Chair
Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee
475 L’Enfant Plaza SW, Room 3300
Washington, DC 20260

Dear Chair Bueno and Members of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee:

Our community was deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved P-22, the mountain lion known as the “Hollywood Cat."

P-22 was many things: our favorite celebrity neighbor, the occasional troublemaker, and a beloved mascot for our city. His exploits were followed not just by ordinary community members, but he had a devoted following online, and his comings and goings were even tracked by the local news. But most of all, he was a magnificent and wild creature, who reminded us all that we are part of a natural world so much greater than ourselves. Even in Los Angeles.

The work to protect wildlife in our cities will continue, with P-22’s spirit guiding us every step of the way.

We are asking for the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee to recommend to the Postmaster General that a postal stamp in honor of P-22 be issued. At the same time, the 100th anniversary of the Hollywood sign is approaching and we would like to commemorate this anniversary with a U.S. Postal Stamp for the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association. We therefore recommend the photo by National Geographic photographer, Steve Winter, with P-22 in front of the historic
Hollywood sign.

We appreciate your time and consideration.
