Congressman Schiff on Settlement Between Remington Arms and Families of Sandy Hook Victims

"For too long, the gun industry has evaded accountability for its role in the gun violence crisis, hiding behind legally-enshrined but indefensible protections to deny victims of gun violence and their families their day in court. Today's announcement of a $73 million settlement between Remington Arms and the families of five adults and four children killed in the Sandy Hook massacre marks a momentous step forward in the fight to hold negligent gun manufacturers accountable.

“While no amount of financial restitution can bring back the precious lives stolen from us in this shooting, this historic victory sends a stark message to the gun industry and gun manufacturers across the nation – that they will be held accountable. And it underscores the importance of the effort to repeal the laws that protect the gun industry when it acts negligently, through my Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, which was recently endorsed by the President.

“We have the power to end gun violence as we know it by ensuring all negligent actors are held liable –  we must seize it."
