Congressman Schiff on Scavino, Navarro House Contempt Vote

“Dan Scavino and Peter Navarro were both close aides to President Trump and were intimately involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. They were called before our committee because they have firsthand information that would help Congress and the American people understand how the tragedy of January 6 came about.

“While we hoped Mr. Scavino and Mr. Navarro would join the hundreds of other witnesses who have done their civic duty and assisted our investigation, instead they have ignored legal process and refused to show up. We have no choice but to hold them accountable, and I am pleased that tonight the House adopted our recommendation to cite them for criminal contempt of Congress and refer them to the Justice Department for prosecution.

“Now, the Department has a duty to act promptly on this referral and others that we have sent — and to hold all those responsible for January 6 to account. Without enforcement of congressional subpoenas, there is no oversight or accountability for the former president, nor any other president — past, present, or future. As Judge Carter said last week: ‘If the country does not commit to investigating and pursuing accountability for those responsible, the Court fears January 6 will repeat itself.’

“Tonight, Congress upheld our responsibility. Now, the Justice Department must do the same.”
