Congressman Schiff on Passage of Red Flag Law Preventing Dangerous Individuals from Obtaining Firearms

As we’ve seen after Uvalde, Parkland, Isla Vista, Newtown, and far too many gun tragedies to count, mass shootings are often followed by stories of those who saw the warning signs – the perpetrator was predisposed to violence, made threats against loved ones and strangers, or otherwise demonstrated they would be a risk to themselves and others if they gained possession of a deadly weapon.

“But many felt they were powerless to do anything to stop a dangerous person from getting a gun. Red flag laws give family members and law enforcement the power to act before it’s too late, and have saved lives in the states like California that have enacted them.

“Every American should be able to go to court to prevent someone clearly dangerous from getting a firearm. Today, the House voted to expand this access to legal redress nationwide, and empower citizens to help protect their communities.

“We have so many commonsense tools like this one to stop this senseless scourge of gun violence – all we need to do is act on them.”
