Congressman Schiff on National Abortion Ban Proposed by Republicans
“The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade was dangerous and unprecedented, and Republican leaders have taken every opportunity since that decision to enact draconian laws to criminalize and further restrict abortion rights in states around the country.
“Today, Republicans in Congress have gone further by taking concrete action to enact a national abortion ban. This is another terrible assault against the fundamental rights to privacy, body autonomy, and health care – and if Republicans are successful in enacting this abortion ban it will threaten the health of millions.
“That criminalizing abortion nationwide was their ultimate goal should never have been in doubt. Republicans have spent decades waging an all-out assault against abortion access for decades, stacking the Supreme Court and state legislatures with partisans determined to repeal this right.
“The House has already acted to codify Roe into law, and the fate of reproductive freedom is stalled in the Senate. Clinging to nonsensical claims of tradition is nothing more than an abdication of duty. Now is the time to remove the filibuster and secure abortion rights.”
