Congressman Schiff on Legislation to Prevent Railroad Work Stoppage

“America's railroad industry is the lifeblood of our economy. Many of the goods and services we rely on come by train – and those trains are powered by workers. For too long, railroad workers have toiled without a contract that ensures fair wages, good benefits, and a secure working environment. Railroad unions have been working diligently to secure an agreement to that end, and it is clear that the railroad companies – not their workers – are to blame for this impasse. Unfortunately, Congress must step in to both ensure that workers receive the paid sick leave they deserve and that America doesn’t fall off the economic cliff that a work stoppage would represent. The choice to support the Tentative Agreement is not a decision I take lightly, but with the addition of the mandated paid sick leave legislation, it is the right one for our economy, for our families, and for the hundreds of thousands of workers who could lose their jobs during a strike. Congress has a responsibility to act.”
