Politico: Adam Schiff to be named top Democrat on influential intel panel

Lauren French of Politico reports on Rep. Adam Schiff’s new role as ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

California Rep. Adam Schiff will be named ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that Schiff, who also serves on the House Select Committee on Benghazi, will be the top Democrat on the influential intelligence panel.

“Schiff has been a vital voice on the most pressing national security challenges of our time, including counter terrorism efforts and challenges in the Middle East. He has proven himself to be a capable leader and a proponent of surveillance reforms,” Pelosi said in a statement.

The post was held by Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) last Congress, but he was forced to relinquish the gavel because of term limits.

Schiff, elected in 2000, has emerged as one of the top Democratic voices on foreign policy and national security issues. When the White House and Democratic leadership asked Congress for funding to combat the growing influence of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Schiff expressed discomfort using the 2001 force authorization to justify intervening in the region.

Instead, he proposed a new Authorization for Use of Military Force to specifically cover any action against ISIL.
