Statement of Congressman Adam Schiff on FBI Director Mueller’s Notes Contradicting Attorney Gonzales's Testimony

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Adam Schiff, sponsor of the House resolution expressing no confidence in the performance of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, released the following statement regarding news reports that FBI Director Robert Mueller’s notes contradict Attorney General Gonzales's account of a hospital visit with former Attorney General Ashcroft.

“Director Mueller's notes add to the body of proof that the Attorney General has been less than candid with the American people,” said Schiff.  “The Justice Department under Gonzales has a real credibility problem and nothing short of his resignation will change that.  His midnight run to an ailing man's bedside to seek authorization for a program of questionable legality and his dissembling accounts to Congress on the subject are further evidence -- if any was needed -- that he must go.”
