Schiff Participates in Town Hall Meeting
with 1,600 Pasadena High School Students

Students provided thoughtful insight and asked
informed questions about the Genocide in Darfur

Washington D.C. – Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) today hosted a town hall meeting about the genocide in Darfur with over 1,600 Pasadena High School students.  The town hall forum provided the students an opportunity to share their thoughts and ask questions about how to best work towards an end to the genocide in Darfur.  A number of Darfur advocates were also on hand to participate in the town hall meeting, which had to be extended in length due to the students’ fascination with the conversation.

“I want to thank Pasadena High School and its students for their participation in this important dialogue on the genocide in Darfur,” Schiff said.  “I was very impressed with the students’ interest and knowledge of this subject.  I appreciated hearing their thoughts and hope that this discussion will encourage them to spread awareness and call for an end to the atrocities that are taking place in Darfur.”

At today’s town hall meeting Rep. Schiff was joined by Professor Edward Alpers, Chair of the UCLA history department; Father Vazken Movsesian, Director of In His Shoes Ministries which provides aid to the people of Darfur and raises awareness to end the atrocities there; Adam Sterling, a National Policy Director for the Sudan Divestment Task Force; and Suad Mansour who previously lived in Sudan, has worked extensively on developing women’s rights in Sudan.

Tomorrow, Rep. Schiff will hold a similar town hall meeting on Darfur with students at Glendale High School at 9 A.M. Pacific Time.  He will be joined by many of same panelist that participated today as well as Mabior Isaac Maol.  Mr. Maol is one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” having fled Sudan during the civil war in 1987.  He raised money to start an orphanage in Darfur for children whose parents have died in the war there and is very active in raising awareness about the crisis in Darfur.
