WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Schiff announced today that six students from the 29th Congressional District have been offered appointments to U.S. Service Academies.

William B. McIlvaine, III, a Burbank resident who attends Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, and Jeffrey Kang, a Pasadena resident who attends Flintridge Preparatory School were offered appointments to the Naval Academy.  Pieter Stephen deJong Miller, a Burbank resident who attends Village Christian School in Sun Valley, and Soo Ho Park, a Burbank resident who attends Burbank High School were offered appointments to the Military Academy (West Point).  Mike Byung Wook Youn, a Glendale resident who attends Glendale High School was offered an appointment to the Air Force Academy.  Michael Jimenez, a Pasadena resident and student at Marshall Fundamental High School was appointed to the Merchant Marine Academy.

“I admire these students’ commitment to protecting our country at such a critical time in our nation’s history,” said Schiff.  “I was extremely proud to nominate these applicants and I know they will be among the future leaders of our country,”

Congressman Schiff recently met with many of these students in his Pasadena office to congratulate them upon their appointment, thank them for their commitment to our country, and to learn about their goals and objectives.  Lt. Miles Nash, who was nominated to West Point by Congressman Schiff and graduated in the class of 2006, also attended the meeting.

Students interested in applying to a Service Academy in 2007, should call Congressman Schiff’s District Office or visit www.house.gov/Schiff  to obtain an application packet.  The application deadline is November 17, 2006.

Congressman Schiff has introduced a "Kids First" agenda of initiatives to improve education, safety, and health care for our children. He is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees.  He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
