Century High School Student Wins Congressional Arts Competition
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced that Jay Sepulveda, a senior at Century High School in Alhambra, won the 2006 29th Congressional District Arts Competition. Sepulveda’s oil pastel painting, “Adam,” will be included in the nationwide Congressional Arts Competition: An Artistic Discovery set to open in Washington, D.C. on June 28, 2006. Following the exhibit, his art will hang in the United States Capitol for one year. Ara Dona of Glendale High School and Rebeka Hernandez of Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra were named the second and third place winners respectively.
“I was extremely impressed with the quality of artwork submitted in this year’s Congressional arts competition,” Schiff said. “All the students deserve recognition for their hard work and exceptional talent. I congratulate Jay, Ara, and Rebeka on being named the winners and look forward to displaying their artwork in the Capitol and in my offices.”
This is the first year Century High School has participated in the art contest. Sepulveda’s artwork was awarded first prize by a panel of judges at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens last night. Sepulveda, one family member, and his art teacher, Ms. Toshika Yoshida, will be awarded airline tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend the exhibit opening.
Second place was awarded to Ara Dona, a senior at Glendale High School, for his work with Conte Pencils titled, “The Basket Girl.” Dona’s artwork will hang in Congressman Schiff’s Washington, D.C. office for one year.
Third place was awarded to Rebeka Hernandez, an 11th grade student at Ramona Convent Secondary School, for her mixed oil-water based acrylic painting, “Family Vision.” Hernandez’s art will hang in Congressman Schiff’s Pasadena office for one year.
Over 200 people attended the award ceremony, which featured music by students from the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. Each student participant received a Certificate of Special Recognition from Congressman Schiff.
Congressman Schiff has introduced a "Kids First" agenda of initiatives to improve education, safety, and health care for our children. He is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
