Schiff Statement on Harriet Miers

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Schiff made the following statement:

"Significant questions have been raised about the strength of Harriet Miers’ background and qualifications for the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, she deserved a fair hearing and should not have been forced to withdraw her nomination prior to confirmation proceedings.  The inconsistent and often problematic manner in which the White House defended her nomination contributed to its failure, as did the increasingly poisonous climate surrounding all nominations. This does not serve the courts or the country well. I hope that the White House will nominate a well-qualified and mainstream candidate that has a history of respect for the individual rights and freedoms, and that the next nomination will be advanced and considered in a more dignified fashion," said Congressman Schiff.

Congressman Schiff is the Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on the Judicial Branch and a member of the House Judiciary Committee.  He is also a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles.  He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
