WASHINGTON, DC – Today the House passed a bill that includes $375,000 for the City of Pasadena’s Perchlorate Treatment Program. Working with the City of Pasadena, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) requested the funding for this project in the 2006 Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill.
The funds will help pay for the design of a perchlorate treatment facility that will not only generate cleaner water but also create additional water supplies in the event of a major earthquake. After the discovery of perchlorate contamination in several area water supplies, several facilities were closed. With critical local supplies unavailable, Pasadena is increasingly dependent on water imported from other regions.
Perchlorate is the main ingredient of solid rocket fuel and has been used by the Defense Department and NASA. Perchlorate has been detected in sources of drinking water for more than 11 million people.
“Clean water is a basic necessity for California families,” said Schiff. “With limited federal funds available for local needs, I am pleased that Members of the House and Senate understood the importance of cleaning up the water in our region.”
“I’m thrilled to hear that Pasadena’s new water treatment facility will receive federal funds,” said Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard. “This project is so important because clean and plentiful water supplies benefit the entire region. I thank Congressman Schiff for his tireless efforts on behalf of our community.”
Congressman Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
