Schiff Secures Funding for Three Projects in Pasadena and Altadena
WASHINGTON, DC – Today the House is expected to pass the Science, State, Justice and Commerce Appropriations Bill which includes funding for three at-risk youth programs in Pasadena and Altadena:
- Hillsides Altadena Family Center of Altadena – Teen Leadership Institute. Teen Leadership Institute (TLI) program offers leadership development training to youth at risk of gang activity by teaching them to be role models to the younger children who participate in the Center’s children’s programs. TLI teaches the teenagers skills and values that include academic success, decision-making, leadership initiative, effective communication, emotional well-being and classroom management.
- Foothill Family Service of Pasadena – “Future Success/Future Visions” Therapy Program for At-Risk Children. Studies show that the brothers and sisters of teen parents are at extremely high risk of becoming teen parents themselves. This program provides mentoring to at-risk children, providing them with positive role models who guide them toward educational achievement and proper social development. These funds will allow Foothill Family Service to hire an additional teen specialist to provide services to more siblings of teen parents.
- Day One of Pasadena – Drug-Free Alternative Activities for Youth. Funds will be used to extend to year-round their innovative August program that has provided youth most at risk for substance abuse with healthy and educational activities. Youth will be involved in planning leadership and educational summits for their peers as well as designing and creating safe and fun activities to help reduce alcohol and drug abuse.
The funding amounts will be finalized once the bill is approved by the Senate and signed by the President.
