Schiff to Attend Clinton Center Dedication
Local Lawmaker to Travel to Little Rock on Thursday for Dedication of 42nd President’s Official Library
WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) will travel with other lawmakers to Little Rock, Arkansas for the official dedication of the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center. “America experienced unparalleled peace and prosperity during the Clinton Administration,” Congressman Schiff said. “Scholars will now have a home to study the many remarkable achievements made during the eight years of that Administration.”
Located in a large park on the banks of the Arkansas River in the state’s capital where President Clinton served as governor and attorney general, the Clinton Presidential Center includes a 20,000 square foot museum, an 80-seat theater and replicas of the Oval Office and White House Cabinet Room. The Center also includes an archival library with approximately 80 million documents and records as well as almost two million photographs. It is the eleventh such library maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration to house the papers and official records of former presidents.
Initiated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and later codified by the Presidential Libraries Act of 1955, the federal government sustains presidential libraries for the public to conduct historical research. These sites are often located at what are considered to be the hometowns of presidents, and are generally accompanied by museums housing artifacts and other mementos from the presidents’ lives. They include the Herbert Hoover Library in West Branch, IA, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, NY, the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, MO, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Abilene, KS, the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library in Boston, MA, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, TX, the Gerald R. Ford Library in Ann Arbor, MI (with a museum in Grand Rapids, MI), the Jimmy Carter Library in Atlanta, GA, the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA, and the George H.W. Bush Library in College Station, TX. Private corporations manage the Richard M. Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda, CA – with his papers presently held by the federal government under the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974 – and the Rutherford B. Hayes Memorial Library in Freemont, OH.
Congressman Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
