Service Academy Night This Monday

Local Lawmaker Encourages Students Interested in Military,
 Naval,
Air Force and Merchant Marine Academies to
Attend on October 11

 

WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) is sponsoring a Service Academy Night for local high school students who are interested in applying through his office for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point:

When:              Monday, October 11, 2004 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Where:             Glendale American Legion

                               714 W. Wilson Ave., Glendale

 

In attendance with Congressman Schiff will be Lt. Col. Pat “Lefty” O’Doul (Military Academy representative), Lt. Chris Sambar (Naval Academy representative), Major Jim Schlumpberger (Air Force Academy representative) and Commander Maura Mullahey (Merchant Marine Academy representative).

 

For more information, students should contact Congressman Schiff’s Pasadena Office at (626) 304-2727 or visit www.house.gov/schiff (Constituent Services).  Students may also obtain a nomination packet through his office.  Applications for 2005 admissions are due in Congressman Schiff’s Pasadena Office at 35 S. Raymond Ave. Suite 205, by November 12, 2004.  Students between the ages of 17 to 22 can apply.  The application process requires submission of SAT test scores, letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

 

Congressman Schiff has assembled a community panel made up of retired and reserve officers from all branches of service to interview each candidate for academy consideration.  Once selected for an appointment, students will receive a full four-year scholarship and after graduation a commission as an officer in the armed services.  The academies seek students who are proven leaders in school as well as in extracurricular activities such as athletics, and who exhibit a strong work ethic and commitment to community service.

 

Congressman Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
