Local Lawmaker Lauded as “Legislator of the Year” by
California Probation, Parole and Correctional Association
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) has been named “Legislator of the Year” by the California Probation, Parole and Correctional Association (CPPCA). “I am honored to be given this award by a group whose work is dangerous and often unheralded,” Congressman Schiff said. “Those who keep watch over those who would do us harm are truly the guardians of our communities.”
In 2000 in the California Legislature, then-State Senator Adam Schiff and then-Assemblymember Tony Cardenas authored AB 1913, known as the Schiff-Cardenas Crime Prevention Act. This program, administered as the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act (JJCPA), provides a source of funding for community-based solutions to locally identified juvenile crime prevention needs. CPPCA highlights this legislation as one of many reasons their membership has chosen to honor Congressman Schiff. Today, there are 193 programs in 56 counties being operated under Schiff-Cardenas. The program has been successful, with juveniles receiving JJCPA services being less likely to be arrested or incarcerated, and more likely to complete court-ordered community service.
Founded in 1917 and headquartered in Sacramento, CPPCA is the only statewide professional association that advocates for those who work in the correctional field. The organization is holding its awards luncheon on Thursday, September 16 at Anaheim’s Disneyland Hotel as part of their 73rd annual conference. CPPCA has approximately 2,000 members made up of probation and parole officers, and correctional officers in adult and juvenile facilities. The group encourages new staff and seasoned officers to better the profession through improved supervising and training. CPPCA has several local chapters, the largest of which is the Los Angeles County chapter with about 700 members.
Congressman Schiff is a former federal prosecutor, the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
