WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Schiff (CA-29) today announced that local high school students may begin the application process through his office for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.
Applications for 2005 admissions are due in Congressman Schiff’s Pasadena Office at 35 S. Raymond Ave. Suite 205, by November 12, 2004. Students between the ages of 17 to 22 can apply. The application process requires submission of SAT test scores, letters of recommendation and a personal essay. “It is my good fortune to nominate young men and women from our community to attend these well-respected institutions,” Congressman Schiff said.
Congressman Schiff has assembled a community panel made up of retired and reserve officers from all branches of service to interview each candidate for academy consideration. Once selected for an appointment, students will receive a full four-year scholarship and after graduation a commission as an officer in the armed services. The academies seek students who are proven leaders in school as well as in extracurricular activities such as athletics, and who exhibit a strong work ethic and commitment to community service.
Congressman Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
