Four Locals Selected for Fulbright Awards
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Schiff congratulated a college professor from South Pasadena and three college students from Pasadena whom have been selected by the U.S. State Department to be 2004-2005 recipients of Fulbright program awards. The recipients are:
Dr. Carol Wise, a political science professor at the University of Southern California who will be lecturing on political economy and conducting research on social policy at Carlton University in Ottowa, Canada;
Ms. Luna Federici, a geology student at Stanford University who will study climate dynamics off the coast of New Zealand ;
Mr. Neal H. Lin, a public health student at Yale University who will study tropical disease outbreaks in Taiwan;
Ms. Rachel A. Medwood, a recent graduate in economics from the California Institute of Technology who will be studying at the Tinbergen Institute in Amsterdam, Holland.
“I am proud to represent these four distinguished individuals in Congress,” Congressman Schiff said. “I am sure that their experiences in the Fulbright program will be worthwhile, and that their work will make a positive difference.”
Established by Congress in 1946 to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries…,” the program provides around 4,500 grants each year to both Americans and foreign nationals in 140 countries to travel outside of their home country to study, research and teach. Since its founding, 96,400 Americans and 158,600 foreign nationals have participated in the program.
Congressman Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
