WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) will present the Purple Heart Military Service Medal to Altadena resident and Korean War Veteran Richard R. Hines, Jr. during an Altadena Town Council meeting at the Altadena Community Center at 730 E. Altadena Dr., Altadena on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at 7 PM. Hines served as a Private First Class in the United States Army from February 1948 to February 1952 as part of the 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea.
"I am honored to recognize the extraordinary valor and service of Charles R. Hines, Jr. by presenting him with the Purple Heart," said Rep. Schiff. "Despite being wounded on three different occasions, Mr. Hines continued to fight to defend the values of our great country. Now, more than ever, it is most important to remember the sacrifices and bravery of America's veterans."
The Purple Heart is authorized for the first wound suffered, but for each subsequent award an Oak Leaf Cluster is awarded to be worn on the medal or ribbon. Hines was awarded a Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters for wounds received as a result of hostile actions. He received his first wound on October 9, 1950; his second wound on March 15, 1951; and his third wound on April 21, 1951.
Mr. Hines contacted Rep. Schiff's office and Rep. Schiff worked with the Department of Defense to secure the medal. Schiff's district office is available to assist veterans who are constituents in securing medals to which they are entitled. For more information, please call (626) 304-2727.
