WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff announced today that Glendale Community College will receive $100,000 in federal funds for the Cimmarusti Science Center’s K-12 math and science education outreach program.
"Glendale Community College is one of California’s leading community colleges, serving over 25,000 students," Rep. Schiff said today. "This funding will help complete the mission of the Cimmarusti Science Center by training K-12 teachers and giving them the tools to teach math and science more effectively, and I was proud to support this project."
The Center’s outreach program will offer evening, weekend, and summer teacher training sessions for K-12 educators. The sessions will address ways to more effectively teach math and science in schools. They will also expose educators to a variety of teaching approaches, strengthen their understanding of curricular methods and skills, and heighten their ability to use inquiry based learning.
In each case, the College faculty members responsible for the training will develop materials that the teachers can take back and use directly with their students. The participating K-12 educators will also receive a small stipend to encourage them to improve their skills and become Master Teachers through the program.
The Education Training Outreach Program will also be able to draw on the benefits of the Cimmarusti Science Center and its computer screen projection system planetarium and the Center’s labs and exhibits, including ones with direct links to NASA databases through the nearby Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The Program will also benefit from the Center’s lecture series designed to bring K-12 students in contact with professors and local engineering and science professionals to talk to them about math and science and scientific careers.
This funding was included in the final House Omnibus Appropriations Bill for FY04 - which passed the full House of Representatives. The U.S. Senate is slated to take up the Omnibus Appropriations Bill in early January 2004.
Rep. Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
