WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff today urged students interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy next year to submit their completed applications to his District Office in Pasadena by Friday, November 14, 2003. Applications can be mailed or submitted in person to 35 South Raymond Ave., Suite 205, Pasadena, 91105. Members of Congress nominate a limited number of students from their district to the United States Service Academies including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
"The Service Academies teach leadership, dedication and a strong commitment to work and success," said Rep. Schiff. "Among the best and brightest students attend these institutions. I am pleased and honored to be able to nominate local students to these academies that represent our nation. I urge any students in the 29th District interested in attending one of the Service Academies to send in their applications as soon as possible."
Rep. Schiff has assembled a community panel made up of members with a blend of military experience that will interview each candidate for academy consideration. Once selected for an appointment, students will receive a full four-year scholarship, and a commission as an officer in the military after graduation. The academies seek students who are proven leaders in school, athletics, work ethic and community service. Students between the ages of 17 and 22 can apply. The application process requires submission of SAT test scores, letters of recommendation and a personal essay.
