WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff today invited high school seniors interested in applying to a U.S. Service Academy and those seeking more information about the application and selection process to join him for a "Service Academy Night" on October 13, 2003, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., at the Glendale American Legion, 714 W. Wilson Ave., Glendale.
"The Service academies teach leadership, dedication and a strong commitment to work and success," said Rep. Schiff. "Among the best and brightest students attend these institutions. I am pleased and honored to be able to send local students that represent our district to academies that represent our nation."
Members of Congress nominate a very limited number of students from their district to the United States Service academies each year. In return for a commitment to serve our nation as an officer, qualified students can receive a free college education at the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs or the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.
Rep. Schiff has assembled a community panel made up of members with a blend of military experience that will interview each candidate for academy consideration. The academies seek students who are proven leaders in school, athletics, work ethic and community service. Applications for entrance to a Service Academy in 2004 are due to Congressman Schiff’s District Office by November 14, 2003. Students between the ages of 17 and 22 can apply. The application process requires submission of ACT and/or SAT test scores, letters of recommendation and a personal essay.
Representatives from the Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Merchant Marine Academy will be on-hand at the "Service Academy Night" to discuss the entrance requirements and opportunities offered at each Academy.
For more information or an application packet, contact Congressman Schiff’s District office at (626) 304-2727.
Rep. Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
