WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) issued the following statement in support of H.R. 1828, the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act OF 2003, in a full House International Relations Committee markup of the bill today:
"Chairman Hyde, Ranking Member Lantos, I would like to thank you for holding this very important markup today.
As a cosponsor of H.R. 1828, the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act, I believe it is time we take resolute action to restore sovereignty to Lebanon and end Syria’s occupation of that country.
Whether as a state sponsor of terrorism, an occupying force in Lebanon, a developer of weapons of mass destruction, or most recently as a threat to Iraqi peace, Syria must be held accountable for its actions. Unfortunately, until now Syria has continued to enjoy minimal economic and diplomatic sanctions despite its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. This is not only contrary to our commitment to rout out terrorists wherever they may be, it is an affront to the men and women who are risking their lives in the war on terrorism.
It is time we speak with one voice against terrorists and those that support them. It is time we act on the many warnings issued against the Syrian Government. Passing H.R. 1828 will implement necessary sanctions on the Syrian Government until it changes its destructive policies, respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of its neighbors, and joins the international coalition against the war on terrorism and multilateral efforts to bring peace and stability to the region.
Thank you and I urge an "aye" vote."
