FY 04 House Transportation Appropriations Bill Includes Funding to Improve Foothill Transit; Bill Passed Full House of Representatives
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff announced today that the final House Transportation, Treasury and Independent Agencies Act for FY 04 - which passed the full House of Representatives late yesterday evening - includes $4 million for Foothill Transit for its "Transit Oriented Neighborhood Program."
"By encouraging more transit use during peak commuter hours, this program will help mitigate the traffic congestion and poor air quality which plagues the San Gabriel Valley," Rep. Schiff said. "I am proud to have been a part of the effort to secure this assistance in order to improve mass transit opportunities in our community.
Foothill Transit will use this funding for the construction of commuter park-and-ride facilities throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Over the past several years, parking in Foothill's service area has dwindled and existing facilities have been overcrowded, discouraging transit use. This new program will enable Foothill to address this need and continue its long tradition of customer responsiveness.
Foothill Transit is a public/private partnership which has previously been recognized by Congress as a national model of transit authorities nationwide. Foothill provides public transit service over a 327 square-mile service area and has a fleet of 233 clean diesel and 66 CNG buses.
Rep. Schiff requested the funds as part of a joint-effort with Reps. David Dreier, Gary Miller, Grace Napolitano, Hilda Solis.
Rep. Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
