Schiff Requests Funds To Restore Arroyo Watershed

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff requested $500,000 from the House Appropriations Subcommittee Energy and Water this week to go towards the completion of the Arroyo Seco Watershed Management Plan. The funds will be used by the Army Corps of Engineers to develop a watershed management plan based on restoration of the hydrologic functioning of the watershed, the management of water quality, ecosystem restoration, and improved recreational opportunities and open space. The Arroyo Seco Watershed encompasses the cities of La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Los Angeles, California.

"Preserving California's environmental treasures, such as the Arroyo Seco Watershed, is fundamental to ensuring open space and recreation areas for generations to come," Rep. Schiff said today. "I hope these funds will help restore the areas around the Arroyo Watershed and conserve California's natural surroundings."

The Arroyo Seco Watershed Management Plan is a project supported and coordinated by the County of Los Angeles to develop a comprehensive, environmentally friendly approach to manage the Arroyo Seco Watershed. The project is supported by the Arroyo Seco Foundation, North East Trees, the California Coastal Conservancy, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, and the cities in the watershed. Rep. Schiff's request signifies the first installment of a three-year request totaling $1,500,000 from the Title I Department of the Army Corps of Engineers General Investigations account.

Rep. Schiff also requested $525,000 for a feasibility study for the Headworks Spreading Ground project by both the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Los Angeles. With support from the Army Corps of Engineers, the feasibility study will determine the potential for environmental and ecosystem restoration and the construction of a new water distribution system and hydroelectric plant.

Rep. Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
