WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Adam Schiff testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury, and Independent Agencies today to request $1 million for the Collegian Busway Improvement Project in Monterey Park.
"For many residents in Monterey Park, the bus system plays a huge role in their daily lives - getting to the store, the doctor, to work and home again," Rep. Schiff said today. "It is important that the City of Monterey Park has the tools and resources it needs to ensure the bus system remains safe, efficient and effective. I hope my colleagues in the House will join me in funding this important project."
Collegian Avenue in Monterey Park serves as a transfer point for three major bus systems: the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the City of Montebello Bus Lines and the City of Monterey Park's Spirit Bus System. Collegian Avenue, however, was never designed to handle such pedestrian and vehicle traffic and has often created an unsafe, inefficient and congested environment.
Schiff requested $1 million today as part of the Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations Act to: 1) establish a Smart Transit Information System to provide transit route and destination information 2) make street improvements to allow for the co-existence of both pedestrian and heavy vehicle traffic, and 3) install a security system to improve the safety for the students and business patrons who frequent the area during evening and early morning hours.
Rep. Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
