WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Adam Schiff announced today that he is a recipient of the National Parks Conservation Association "Friend of the National Parks" award. The award recognizes members of Congress who actively work to preserve and protect the integrity of our national park system.
"I am honored to have received this recognition from the National Parks Conservation Association, a bipartisan organization devoted to educating citizens about the environmental voting records of federally elected officials," said Rep. Schiff. "My voting record on environmental issues reflects my strong commitment to responsible stewardship of our public lands and natural resources. This is essential if we are to retain their natural beauty for everyone to enjoy."
Originally created as a watchdog for the National Park Service, today the National Parks Conservation Association partners with the federal government and numerous national, regional, and local groups to safeguard the scenic beauty, wildlife, and historical and cultural treasures of the largest and most diverse park system in the world. The "Friend of the National Parks" award is based solely on a members' voting record on legislation considered by the National Parks Conservation Association to be significant to the national parks. In order to win the award, a member must have voted for 67% of conservational and park-related votes cast during the 107th Congress (2001-2002). The 166 House representatives who received the award were judged on 6 park-related votes in the House. Information about the specific votes upon which the award is based is available on the National Parks Conservation Association website at http://www.npca.org.
Earlier this month, Representative Schiff and Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced the Rim of the Valley Corridor Study Act, calling for a study of expanding the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area to protect open space and provide recreational opportunities in the region. It has received bi-partisan support in the House and a number of environmental organizations support the legislation, including the Altadena Foothills Conservancy, the California Wilderness Coalition, Scenic America, and the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club, as well as the cities of La Canada Flintridge, Glendale, Pasadena, and South Pasadena.
Schiff represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
